Attendance Policy

RISE Institute has 182 attendance days based on the school calendar. In order to obtain the best possible education, it is important that student’s log into class and their curriculum on a daily basis and on time. Our goal is to maximize every student’s opportunity to learn. Attendance is the responsibility of learning coaches and students.

Present

Students are considered present and in attendance for a learning day, if students attend all live sessions and have logged into Canvas.

Absences

If a student needs to be marked absent from attendance in either the live classes or completing the online curriculum, RISE Institute will need to be notified using the following protocol:

Please email administration and teachers by 10 AM in your time zone, and leave a message that includes: child’s name, grade, reason of absence.

    Absent Work

Students are expected to make up any missed work by contacting the teacher for both excused and unexcused absences. Credit received for unexcused absences are up to the teacher’s discretion.

    Examples of excused absences:

    • Illness: a doctor’s/parent note of reason for absence is required for your student’s attendance file.
    • Medical appointments or treatments: will require a doctor’s note for the student’s attendance file
    • Family Death: a parent note is required for the student’s attendance file
    • Personal or family emergency: a parent note is required for the student’s attendance file

      Examples of unexcused absences:

      • Family vacations
      • Non-medical appointments
      • Absent from school without notice
      • Absence for any other reason that does not meet the criteria of an excused absence

        Tardiness:

Tardiness to school is defined as not being present in the virtual Assembly at 8:00 AM Pacific Standard Time. All students (Kindergarten to Grade 12) are expected to join the assembly. Families are welcome to participate during special assemblies. Students who arrive after 8:05 AM Pacific Standard Time will not be allowed to attend the morning assembly, as this causes disruption.

Students are also expected to be prepared and logged into their live classes prior to the start of class. Students who arrive 5 minutes past the scheduled start time will be counted as tardy.

Extended Leave of Absence for Students

Studies show that regular attendance plays a crucial role in a student’s academic success. As we are an online school, we do provide the convenience of being able to access classes even while traveling. Classes would also be recorded if the student is in a different timezone and can be accessed later. Parents should notify the teachers of any changes in routine due to change in location.

However, if parents believe that they will not be able to participate in academics at all for more than 3 days, the following protocol will be followed in the case of an extended leave

Length of Time Off Advance Notice Action to take
          3-10 school days 1 week

          Extended leave form

          Schedule meet with Teacher(s)

          11+ school days 2 weeks

          Teacher(s)

          Director of Academics

For your child’s academic benefit, you will be required to meet with teachers prior to the absence (and possibly the Director of Academics) to discuss the terms of the contract and provide all necessary coursework to ensure they are able to complete all missing work. Students are expected to check in with their teacher while absent during the teacher’s assigned office hours. When the student returns, they will be required to turn in all absent work within the timeframe designated in the contract.
